Social Security, Medicare, & Aduhelm

The Good News...The Social Security Administration announced cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) benefits will increase by 5.9 percent in 2022, the largest increase in 30 years.

The Bad News...The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that Medicare's Part B monthly premium will increase by 14.5% in 2022, the largest dollar increase in the health insurance program's history.

The Reasons...

COVID-19 - $5.3 trillion was spent by the U.S. Government in managing the pandemic and the effects of COVID on the economy, including impact to families and businesses.

Aduhelm "set-aside. It is still undecided if Medicare will cover Aduhelm. In the meantime, CMS is setting aside money to cover the drug IF Medicare will cover the $56K per person price tag.

Here's the really bad news: A recent article from Bloomberg reports 35% of patients in an Aduhelm study experienced brain swelling. This is not unexpected as the side effects were well documented as a concern prior to FDA approval. These results come from the Aducanumab EMERGE and ENGAGE trials from 2015 -2019 that were terminated early yet provided a large set of safety data.
